Minority Voices Theater Presents- Having Our Say: The Delaney Sisters’ First 100 Years.

Minority Voices Theatre presents Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years. A staged reading of this powerful and engaging play by Emily Mann and directed by Stan Coleman will take place on Sunday, February 26 at 2pm at Tsunami Books. The readers for this production will be two pillars in the local Black community, Arbrella Luvert and Charmaine Coleman.

“Having Our Say is a play that brings front and center a history of African Americans through the eyes of two brave and extraordinary women,” says Coleman (who is also a co-founder of Minority Voices Theatre). “Recounting events from their lives, they tell this history from Reconstruction right up to the present. The play chronicles the way these woman, while facing discrimination and disparagement, fought for their freedom and their equality. They paved a way so that other minorities could hold their heads up in dignity,’ Coleman continues. “And the story these women relate is so credible because they have lived a century to be able to tell it.”

The Having Our Say website describes the play as the “story about America’s people. As it demonstrates how vision, tenacity and courage can help strong people prevail over seemingly insurmountable odds, it is also a testament to the human spirit, wherever it is found.”

This is the first production of Minority Voices Theatre, whose goal is to create opportunities for members of marginalized communities to see their stories reflected on a local stage, and the opportunity to help bring those stories to life.

“It is so exciting to have Arbrella Luvert and Charmaine Coleman reading the parts of these remarkable women,” says Minority Voices co-founder Carol Dennis. “We couldn’t have asked for a better or more distinguished way to begin this new venture.”
