JANUARY 18TH
9 AM NORTH GATE AUTZEN STADIUM
MARCH COMMENCES AT 10 AM
The Eugene/Springfield NAACP will host the 29th community MLK march January 18th. This years’ event is sponsored in part by LTD and the University of Oregon. NAACP is a 107 year old organization that was created to combat domestic terrorism and, continues to work for a balanced and dignified society that values all of its members. Organizers hopes this year’s march can be a sign of the positive nature of Americas journey for justice. In that light they are inviting the Eugene/Springfield community to come together in a show of solidarity and in opposition to the growing divisions in our world today. Branch president Eric Richardson states that 2015 was a trying year for those who love justice and peace. “ Last year was a very traumatic one for America, and I hope this march and rally can serve as a rallying call to stay in the fight for a just and equitable future for all people regardless of religion, race or economic status.” Richardson believes American pluralism can serve as a model for the world to overcome divisions and hatred. The Eugene March will commence at 10 am by the north gate of Autzen Stadium after the kickoff rally. Marchers will march to the Shedd institute for a program aimed at showing solidarity between religious, civic, and racial groups. The University of Oregon will host the kick off, with free coffee and words from student leaders and Campus representatives. Among the speakers at the Kickoff event will be new LTD General Manager Aurora Jackson, UO provost Scott Coltrane and Mayor Kitty Piercy. LTD is providing free MLK day bus passes for participants to utilize our great public transportation system to get back to their cars or to travel to Springfield for their March which starts at 1pm at the Springfield City Hall.
