On most measures of medical outcomes, American patients do better if they’re
white. Physicians, nurses and other health care professionals work in an
environment which, despite their good intentions, produces racial
disparities in outcomes. Both the Oregon Medical Association and American
Medical Association recently released statements advocating physician
leadership in achieving change to our health care system. This is the first
time a state or national physician organization specifically identified
institutionalized racism and called on physicians to act. How can health
care professionals reduce racial disparities in outcomes for all patients,
not just their own? The authors of the OMA statement on racism and the
president of the AMA will discuss this challenge for physicians.
