Memorial Day Community BBQ- Celebrating Service!
May 27, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Eugene, Or- Defending hard won liberty and freedom is the theme of this year’s NAACP community gathering to be held this Memorial Day Monday May 27th. The event offers a free BBQ and children’s activities in the central setting of Washington Park at 22nd and Washington. This will be the 8th annual event which was started by the Lane Community College Black Student Union in 2011. Since 2013 the local NAACP has hosted the event recognizing the link between the fight for liberty and the story of the African American community. This year’s event will also bring attention to the African American connection to Memorial day which has been traced to burials observed after the civil war in South Carolina. Eric Richardson branch president says “this is an excellent opportunity to honor the sacrifices of all people who love this country Black, Brown and otherwise. Gold medalists from the local Act-so program and other local artists will perform on the community stage. Richardson says there will be community organizations tabling and that all community members are welcome. This is a great opportunity to get out into the neighborhood and enjoy a meal in the park with family and friends.
